Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. introduced a new 8mm film standard called "Single 8" around the same time as Super 8. Although the film format was the same as Kodak Super 8, the cartridge shape differed significantly. While the Kodak Super 8 system had the largest market share worldwide, Single 8 models were developed primarily for the Japanese market. Consideration was given to maximize the reuse of parts from Super 8 models to Single 8 models during the R&D phase.

The cartridge loading method of Super 8 and Single 8 systems was symmetrical. Because of this, designing an inverted Super 8 model as a Single 8 model was once considered. In fact, a test model with the viewfinder on the bottom of the camera was produced, but it proved not to be easy to handle, and this idea was eventually rejected.

This particular model had the same specifications as the Zoom 518 Super 8 (which was released in 1964), but it had a very sturdy design with an exterior die-cast metal battery compartment and a fixed handle. This camera also featured a winding lever, which was unique to the Single 8 system, and was well received by many 8mm film camera enthusiasts.
