This was the first Canon film camera to use a "magnetic shutter release". Initially, the first electronic applications were introduced to film cameras in the form of electronic motors for film drive and zooming, as well as EE (exposure control) mechanisms. However, with the introduction of the magnetic relaxation mechanism, the full integration of electronics gradually started. The magnetic release mechanism allowed the systematization of release operations and the control of turning the camera on and off by means of electronic pulses. The magnetic release system became the standard in 8mm film cameras from this model on.

The popular 8x zoom lens has been redesigned to provide higher contrast. It had a bright viewfinder and a Servo EE system. In addition, it had variable shutter opening control to achieve perfect fade in and fade out transitions. It was even possible to shoot in slow motion at around 40 fps.

A folding handle was fitted, and an interval timer was available as an accessory.
